WHO IS MAMIE SMITH?
I grew up in a rural area, twelve miles north of Kosciusko, Mississippi. I am the third child in a family of thirteen brothers and sisters. My father owned a large farm; grew fruits, vegetables, and cotton– from which most of the family income was generated. It was a hard life, but one that built character, determination and perseverance. Religion played a vital role in the life of our family, as well as the community. The church was the central force that guided education, personal growth and spiritual development. That force led me, at the age of twelve, to seek a greater understanding of God. This has continued throughout my life.
DEALING with LIFE
After completing three years of college, I married a military man, had three children — two sons and a daughter, and traveled the world. These travels included living in many parts of America, Stuttgart, Germany and Okinawa, Japan. My world became smaller as I mingled with people of many ethnic groups, learned new cultures, investigated and practiced the Baptist, Methodist and Catholic religions, and began to understand the brotherhood of all mankind.
THE IMPACT OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
It, however, was not until I became a student of Christian Science, that I began to discover the true identity of man. This understanding gave me the courage to continue my education, acquire a Doctorate Degree in Education, tackle the job market with vigor and determination, and become a teacher of music for many years. There were failures along the way, but successes far out-numbered them. While life was not “a bowl of cherries,” it was productive, financially stable, and relatively happy. While still teaching, my daughter and I opened and operated an upscale clothing boutique for several years. Even though we were business partners, we were first and foremost, mother and daughter. She ran day-to-day operations, and I handled all financial obligations and decisions. It became an online store exclusively, one month ago.
ONE DAY MY WORLD FELL APART — I LOST MY DAUGHTER TO BREAST CANCER
This book grew out of deep-seated pain, grief, and sorrow. It is an accounting of a mother’s love, a daughter’s strength and courage, and a devotion to our faith.
“I see her (Meta) as planted by divine mind, nurtured by spirit, and yielding the fruits of love” (Mamie Smith).
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN LIFE THROWS YOU A CURVE? YOU REGROUP!
After writing The Unfolding of a Rose. I began to see life differently. It became very essential that I re-define my purpose in life and seek higher goals and aspirations. I needed to find a way to serve God more by serving mankind better. Indepth thought, spiritual growth, inspiration and dedication to God became central in my life. How did I use these in day-to-day experiences?
THE BUSINESS WORLD
As a business owner, making customers happy, satisfied, and content became more of an objective than what my “bottom line” looked like. Sincerity, honesty and integrity headed the list. New ways of handling day-to-day operations increased, better merchandise choices were made, and astuteness in decision-making elevated.
SPIRITUALITY–THE CENTER AND CIRCUMFERENCE
Many people believe that religion is the circumference, and spirituality is the center. I believe that spirituality is both center and circumference–center being the nucleus of everything real and good, of which every thought, word or deed evolves, generating the circumference of being–the outgrowth and experiences that spring from the center. Spirituality is the application of one’s understanding of divine law, and as these laws are practiced, the understanding grows. One feeds into the other–understanding generates practice, and practice increases understanding.
MY MORNING BEGINS WITH SPIRITUALITY, AND MY ENTIRE DAY IS GUIDED BY ITS REFLECTIVE THOUGHT, OBEDIENCE AND PRACTICE. Everything thing I think, say and do are determined by my connection to God. Sometimes that connection is strong, other times, weak. The success of my day is measured by the strength of my connection.
My blogs, social media interactions, online clothing boutique, second book writing, advertisement, everything stems from my state of thought.
RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY ARE SYNONYMOUS, BUT ARE NOT THE SAME!
Religion is a system of beliefs, practices and ethical values, whereas spirituality is man’s “oneness with God”– that inner spirit that connects one to his highest level of thought and demonstration. It is the very essence of one’s being.
Commenting on “Center and Circumstance,” Richard Rohr says, “We are circumference people, with little access to our natural center.” We dwell along the “confusing edges with essence,” he continues, “too quickly claiming superficial as if it were substance.” This blog, “Open Thought,” seeks indepth thought and contemplation. It holds that Spirit is the only substance, and everything else is material–not substance. Take this personal growth journey with me!
WHAT IS MY ROLE? WHAT DO I GET OUT OF THIS?
I believe that every person has an individuality unique to himself, and this individuality should help to make the world a better place for all mankind. Purity of thought establishes hope, faith, courage, strength and perseverance, and gives the person expressing it a sense of wholeness and well-being. These in turn, help everyone gain a higher sense of what life is–the divine activity of thought. Recognizing this, crime will diminish, hate will dissipate, and disease will lessen. One’s body expresses one’s thoughts and beliefs.
It is my deepest desire that everyone who shares in this blog will come away with a greater sense of peace, love and joy. IF YOU WIN, I WIN ALSO!
WE ARE ALL SPIRITUAL BEINGS MADE IN THE IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF GOD.
If you have read the first chapter of Genesis, you know this, but do YOU REALLY BELIEVE IT! Most people don’t. This is a theme that will run through every post on this blog, because it defines the true nature of man. I welcome your reaction to any statement made, any idea presented, and any demonstration shared. Growth comes through challenges as well as alliances. My spiritual growth has come in tiny steps– sprinkled with joy, sorrow and immense human suffering. I write in the belief that you will receive comfort, peace and the knowledge that you are not alone in what ever pain, suffering or tragedy that maybe happening in your life, as you share this blog. “Open thought, divine logic, and inspiration are gifts that we all have. LET’S SHARE THEM TOGETHER.
GROWING TOGETHER: YOU AND I
As you visit this blog, hopefully again and again, share your story, tell a friend, we will grow together. We will discover the man marked as “the perfect man,” behold what is right and become “sheep of one fold.” There is only one man, and that man is the man God created, described by Moses in Genesis I, as among “everything that is good.” Let us look for that man everywhere we go, in everything that we do, even when death and destruction hide him from human view. I’M READY TO BEGIN THE JOURNEY. HOW ABOUT YOU?
